Delegates to the 2004 Representative Convention supported action items that direct Education Minnesota to:
-
Establish a task force to examine our current dues structure and explore ways in which state dues may be assessed, and explore strategies to assist members in acquiring knowledge of our dues structure and how it aligns with the state budget.
-
Call on the Legislature to direct the Commissioner of Education to seek accountability waivers from U.S. Department of Education based on the transition from previous standards to current standards.
- In addition, the Legislature should direct the commissioner to take all actions needed to enhance teaching and learning in Minnesota by requiring all statewide tests – including those used for AYP purposes – to be instructionally supportive, and by calling a two-year moratorium on the use of MCA results for accountability and NCLB purposes.
-
Study the feasibility of assisting state affiliates of national professional subject-area organizations in the collection of membership dues.
-
Support an AFT resolution which calls for a full-time school nurse in every building, and at least one school nurse for every 750 regular education students.
