2005 RC action items
These are the action Items adopted or considered by the March 18-19, 2005 Representative Convention.

Action Item A
That Education Minnesota use all appropriate fiscal and human resources to support Education Minnesota Crosby-Ironton, Local 1325, in achieving an equitable resolution to its strike.

Action Item 1
That the Education Minnesota Representative Convention shall direct the Governing Board to develop standards for consistent, accurate and timely reporting of contract settlement information to the Education Minnesota field staff and the Negotiations department. These standards shall be presented to the 2006 Representative Convention for action.

The President shall appoint the Executive Director or his designee, a representative of the Negotiations department, and a number of Governing Board members to be determined by the President, to develop these standards as amendments to the Constitution or Bylaws, action items for the Representative Convention, or other organizational mechanism deemed best suited to meet the needs of the members of the organization. The standards shall include a mechanism for enforcement by the appropriate Education Minnesota officials.

Action Item 2
That for the next five years the Governing Board divert the $10 per member crisis fund assessment to a paid media campaign, and, be it further resolved, that this diversion immediately cease if the amount in the crisis fund falls to $10,000,000, and be it further resolved, that all crisis fund interest earnings shall be credited to the crisis fund.

Action Item 3 (motion to refer carried)
All governing board positions on Bylaw Amendments and Action Items reported at the Representative Convention will be accompanied by a summary, including the final tallied vote, of the governing board debate, both pros and cons.

Action Item 4
That the Executive/ Budget Committee continue support of professional development programs such as ER&D (Education Research and Dissemination); NBCT (National Board Certified Teachers) candidate and network support; TALL (Teachers as Learners and Leaders); and e-mentoring for new teachers. This can be accomplished by increasing the funds dedicated to these programs in our current Education Minnesota budget. The amount of increase should reflect the monies needed to sustain the programs that have been funded through various grants which are about to expire.

Action Item 5
The Representative Convention charges the Standards and Ethics Committee to examine the cost and procedure for designing a new, displayable form of the Minnesota teaching license.

Action Item 6 (motion failed)
Education Minnesota requires sitting legislators to have at least a 50% favorable voting record on education issues as determined by Education Minnesota and a 50% favorable voting record on working family (labor) issues as determined by the Minnesota AFL-CIO to be eligible for political endorsement by Education Minnesota.

Action Item 7 (motion to postpone indefinitely carried)
Be it resolved that Education Minnesota call on the National AFL-CIO to demand an immediate end to U.S. occupations of Iraq, the return of U.S. troops to their homes and families, and the reordering of national priorities toward peace and the human needs of our people.
