ST. PAUL, Minn., Nov. 8, 2012 – Victoria Arabanos, who primarily supervises in-school suspension at Plymouth Middle School in the Robbinsdale Area School District, has been named the Education Support Professional of the Year by Education Minnesota for 2013.
Arabanos also regularly stays after school to tutor struggling students. She has volunteered as an assistant coach for the STEP dance team at Sandburg Middle School and Plymouth Middle School, and volunteered for cheerleading, theatre arts and currently rugby.
Arabanos began her career in the military, but for the past 10 years she has been a supervisor of in-school suspension, or ISS, in the Robbinsdale school district. She has been instrumental in setting standards for how the district reacts to misbehavior, including the use of the ISS program.
Krista Range, assistant principal at Plymouth Middle School, said, "Mrs. Arabanos is someone that people trust and respect; she is truly an inspiration to everyone."
Arabanos is actively involved in her local union, serving as vice president and a building representative for the Robbinsdale Federation of Teachers Education Assistants. She will be the lead negotiator for the next round of contract bargaining.
Arabanos was selected for the state award by a committee of educational support professionals, Education Minnesota leaders and an outside education expert. The education support professional of the year receives a $1,000 honorarium and a trip to the National Education Association’s ESP Conference in March, which will be in Louisville, Ky., this year.
