Ballroom A
Stop the bullying! Oh, really?
Are we really serious about stopping the bullying, harassment and intimidation that plague the lives of our K-12 students, or are we just giving lip service to a problem that is unsolvable? The Friday keynote by Dr. Walter Roberts will offer some provocative observations about the nature of the problem and what educators are – and are not – doing to address it. Prepare to be challenged, both professionally and personally, and to get motivated to take the steps necessary to become part of the solution.
Presenter: Walter Roberts, professor of counselor education, Minnesota State University, Mankato

Do No Harm: When Good Intentions Have Painful Results
Room 2-3
All children go through periods of emotional pain. Educators desperately want to help, but too often well-intended words and actions are misunderstood and don't produce the desired result. Minnesota teacher, award-winning author and speaker Jonathan Friesen has lived on both sides of the “pain grid”: Tourette syndrome, anxiety disorders, O/CD, and E/BD filled his school-age years with anger and ostracism. One woman's messages broke through the despair, freeing him to achieve his dreams. Discover the answers kids in crisis desperately need to hear – messages that allow educators to move from classroom management to heart management, and allow kids to move off the pain grid and on to hope and healing.
Presenter: Jonathan Friesen, author, educator, board member of the Tourette Syndrome Association of Minnesota

Read Naturally: Remediate Fluency, Improve Comprehension
Room 5-6
Learn how to combine the research-proven strategies of teacher modeling, repeated reading and progress monitoring into a single, powerful strategy to accelerate the reading achievement of Title I, special education, ELL and mainstream students. This session describes Read Naturally, but the strategies can be used with any classroom reading materials.

Foundations of Effective Teaching 1 and 2: A Snapshot of Classroom Management
Room 7-8
Like all AFT Educational Research and Dissemination courses, Foundations 1 and 2 draw from seminal research on best educational practices and provide opportunities for reflective in-depth study of professional practices. Foundations 1 provides advice, support and information on more effective teaching strategies, while Foundations 2 addresses the challenges educators face daily, including environmental and instructional conditions that foster as well as impede student achievement. This interactive session offers a sampling of learning opportunities these courses offer as we examine how classroom environment lays the foundation for academic success.
Presenters: Mary deLeon-Denton, career teacher coordinator, St. Paul Federation of Teachers; Jennie Deming
