Working with Guest Educators in the classroom
To ensure your Guest Educator will have a successful day, here are some suggestions for Cooperating Educators:
• Brief your Guest Educator about student characteristics and general curriculum goals.
• Explain what students are able to do and what might be beyond their abilities.
• Provide copies of all school policies, daily schedule, times when individual students will leave the classroom and procedures for emergencies.
• Work together on the lesson plan, providing the outline but letting the guest fill in the details as much as possible. Send home copies of educator manual pages for lessons to be taught or recommend resources.
• Encourage your Guest Educator to contribute original ideas.
• Prepare your students with expectations for their behavior.
• As much as possible, let your Guest Educator take the lead in your classroom. Only interject if necessary.
• You can use the time to catch up on paperwork, but stay in the room at all times.
• Arrange to meet early on the morning of the program to orient your Guest Educator to your classroom.
