Get a refund on your state political contributions

Minnesota citizens who are at least 18 years of age and have lived in Minnesota for at least 20 days immediately prior to an election are eligible to participate in the state's Political Contribution Refund Program. Individuals may receive a refund for political contributions made to a state candidate or political party up to $50. Married couples may receive a refund up to $100.

To participate, take the following steps:

  1. Write a check or make a contribution to a state candidate or political party. Education Minnesota suggests that you make the contribution to one of the candidates recommended by Education Minnesota. You may make one contribution of $50 to one candidate or contribute $10 to five different candidates. The total is cumulative.
  2. If you write a check, please write “Education Minnesota member” or “educator” in the memo line.
  3. Once you have given the contribution to the candidate or one of his/her workers, you will receive a receipt. If you mail in the contribution, the receipt will be sent to you. Candidates are required to provide receipts.
  4. Once you have totaled $50 per individual or $100 per couple, fill out the state PCR application form. The form, available on the Minnesota Department of Revenue Web site, can be filled out online and printed.
  5. Attach your receipts to the completed form and send it to: Minnesota Revenue, Political Contribution Refund, St. Paul, MN 55146-1800. This must be done by April 15, 2008.
  6. Be sure to vote.
