Sample schedules for school visits

Elementary school

Identify a member to escort the legislator for each part of the day’s schedule. It is important for the legislator to spend the entire day at your school and see all kinds of situations, including crowded classrooms or outdated materials and equipment.

Show your legislator important programs in your school, efforts to improve student achievement, and unique challenges or issues classroom teachers and other staff are facing.

Adjust the example below to fit your school’s schedule and any activities or facilities you especially want to show the legislator. 

Escort 1 
    8 to 9:30 a.m.

  • Arrive at school (legislator should arrive at the same time the escort arrives).
  • Meet with staff.
  • Students arrive.
  • Beginning of the day activities

Escort 2  
    9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

  • Visits to primary grades, K-3
  • Be sure to include lunch with students in the cafeteria.
  • Try to arrange a variety of grade levels and programs.

Escort 3 
    1 to 4 p.m.

  • Visits to intermediate grades, 4-6
  • Try to arrange a variety of grade levels and programs.

Escort 4  
    4:15 p.m.

  • Meet with teachers (and others as available). It is important to set aside time for dialogue between teachers and legislators.

Middle school or high school

    6:45 a.m. to 8 a.m.

  • Arrive at school (the legislator arrives at the same time the escort arrives).
  • Meet with staff.
  • Students arrive.
  • Homeroom

Escort 2 
    8 a.m. to 11:20 a.m.

  • Decide which programs are important for your legislator to visit.
  • Be sure to include lunch with students in the cafeteria.
  • Try to arrange a variety of programs and grades.

Escort 3  
    11:20 a.m. to 2:20 p.m.

  • Decide which programs are important for your legislator to visit.
  • Try to arrange a variety of programs and grades.
  • Legislator should see the dismissal of the students.

Escort 4 
    2:30 p.m.

  • Meet with teachers (and other staff as available). It is important to set aside time for dialogue between teachers and legislators.
