Education Minnesota milestones

1984 Minnesota Federation of Teachers President Dick Mans and Minnesota Education Association President Marti Zins exchange speeches at the two fall conferences. 
1991 First meeting of MFT and MEA merger teams.
1992 The Minnesota Supreme Court agrees with the MFT that teachers in private, parochial schools have the right to union membership and collective bargaining. Hill-Murray teachers begin negotiating with the school in November.
  Dakota County United Educators becomes Minnesota’s first merged local.
1994 United Technical College Educators becomes the nation’s first merged higher education affiliate.
1995 The MFT Spring Convention and the MEA Representative Assembly adopt a set of principles to guide merger.
  Joint offices open in St. Cloud.
1997 MEA and MFT approve Education Minnesota constitution and bylaws.
1998 Education Minnesota officially comes into being in September.
  First Education Minnesota Professional Conference is held.
  First Education Minnesota Representative Convention elects governing board and NEA directors.
2001 Teachers as Learners and Leaders program begins.
  Representative Convention elects Judy Schaubach as Education Minnesota’s first sole president. Sandra Peterson is elected vice president and Carmen Peters is elected secretary-treasurer.
  United Technical College Educators and Minnesota Community College Faculty vote to merge and form Minnesota State College Faculty.
  Full Capacity Locals initiative begins.
2004 Sandra Peterson is elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives.
2006 Schools First! statewide outreach campaign is launched.
  Education Minnesota member Tim Walz is elected to Congress.
2007 New officers elected: Tom Dooher, president; Paul Mueller,vice president; Denise Specht, secretary-treasurer.

Education Minnesota is an affiliate of the National Education Association, the American Federation of Teachers and AFL-CIO.
