Dooher reacts to governor's proposals

Sept. 23, 2008
Education Minnesota President Tom Dooher released a statement regarding Gov. Tim Pawlenty’s recent proposals around teacher quality, school leadership and a pilot project that targets struggling eighth-graders.

“We’re pleased the governor is putting education and teacher quality at the top of his agenda. These issues are at the top of our agenda as well, and educators are eager to be part of this important conversation,” Dooher said.

Dooher noted the governor hasn’t offered many details about his plans. He also urged state leaders to tackle critical funding issues during the session.

“What’s important is that state leaders address the funding crisis in our schools so students have reasonable class sizes and up-to-date materials," Dooher said. "The governor and legislators must solve the erratic funding problem that has plagued our schools for so long and ensure funding is equitable, sustainable, predictable and sufficient. We also hope the governor is willing to address the needs of early childhood education and higher education.”
