Stand up for workers May 1
Two events this weekend celebrate workers' rights:
A coalition of Minnesota labor and social justice groups will observe May Day this Sunday with an International Workers Day March from the Cathedral of Saint Paul to the Capitol. To participate, gather at the Cathedral at 4 p.m. The march is in support of these goals:
- Stop attacks on workers, unions and immigrants.
- Promote justice, freedom to organize, and legalization and equality for immigrants.
- Oppose free trade agreements with Panama, Colombia and South Korea.
The annual Heart of the Beast Theater May Day Parade takes place 1-4 p.m. Sunday at 25th Street East and 18th Avenue South in Minneapolis. Join labor leaders, the Minneapolis DFL, Sen. Al Franken and the Ellison for Congress campaign.
The labor group begins marching at approximately 2 p.m., so labor members should line up no later than 1:45 p.m. Please wear labor apparel if possible.
In addition, Education Minnesota has designated Tuesday, May 3 – National Teacher Day – as "Raise Your Hand for Education Day." Educators, families and community members are encouraged to go to www.IRaiseMyHand.com and make an online “pledge” of support for students and public schools.
