Funeral services are set Saturday for Willard H. McGuire of Shoreview, Minn., who was a past president of the National Education Association. The funeral for McGuire will be at noon at North Presbyterian Church in North St. Paul.

McGuire taught in the North St. Paul-Maplewood-Oakdale district for 22 years before being elected NEA vice president in 1974. He came to national prominence as a leader in the 1971 and 1972 constitutional convention that restructured the NEA into its present form as a teachers union. The constitution was ratified in 1973.

He acceded to the presidency in 1979, serving two terms. He came back to teaching in 1983.

McGuire, who was 79, died Friday at his home in Shoreview.

McGuire is survived by his wife, Helen, their son and two daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials to  the Willard McGuire Scholarship Fund, Anchor Bank, 2700  E. Seventh Ave., North St. Paul, MN 55109.
