ST. PAUL, Minn., Jan. 26, 2011: Education Minnesota today announced that the 70,000 member educators’ union was endorsing Carly Melin for state representative in District 5B. This is the seat vacated when Tony Sertich was appointed to lead the Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation Board.
“During these times it’s critical that education be a top priority for lawmakers,” said Education Minnesota President Tom Dooher. “Carly Melin clearly understands the importance of a strong public education system to the future of Minnesota.”
Education Minnesota members in the district interviewed several of the candidates in the race. Dooher said Melin’s views on education stood out, and that she demonstrated a depth of knowledge about education issues and policy. “We are looking forward to working with her in the Legislature to help make our strong public schools even stronger,” Dooher said.
Education Minnesota invited all candidates in the race to answer written questions and be interviewed about their views on education. The local screening team selected Melin and the state PAC committee agreed with the decision.
Melin was born and raised in Hibbing. Her father taught law enforcement at Hibbing Community College and her mother has been an active AFSCME member in St. Louis County for many years.
