St. Paul, Minn., March 30, 2011 -- President Tom Dooher issued the following statement today in response to the omnibus education bill passed by the Minnesota House of Representatives early this morning:
“The education bill passed by the Minnesota House is filled with politically motivated policy that does nothing to help children learn. It cuts programs designed to help close Minnesota’s achievement gap, and freezes funding for children with special needs. It cuts programs that help teachers get better at their craft, and contains several Wisconsin-style attacks on the collective bargaining rights of teachers. And it also includes radical methods of evaluating school, student and teacher performance that have no basis in research or practice. Minnesota deserves an education policy that improves the quality of learning for all students and builds upon our state’s excellent system of public education. This bill does neither and we urge Gov. Dayton to veto it if it reaches his desk.”
