ST. PAUL, Minn., May 24, 2011 -- Education Minnesota President Tom Dooher issued the following statement today regarding Gov. Mark Dayton’s veto of the education finance bills:

“We support Gov. Mark Dayton’s decision to veto the education funding bills for both K-12 and higher education.

"The all-cuts budget passed by the Republican majorities took away millions of dollars from students who need the most help. The GOP budget would have cut funding for special education students, and would have made deep cuts to programs that are supposed to help close the achievement gap between white students and students of color. It also did not address the critical need to expand early childhood learning programs.

"The GOP cuts to higher education were so extreme they would have resulted in significantly higher tuition, fewer courses for students and hundreds of faculty layoffs.

"These are the kinds of choices that take Minnesota in the wrong direction. Our state’s long-term prosperity depends on making education Minnesota’s top priority.”
