ST. PAUL, Minn., Sept. 23, 2011: The following is a statement from Education Minnesota President Tom Dooher regarding President Obama’s announcement of new federal requirements for states seeking waivers from the No Child Left Behind Act.
“Education Minnesota supports Minnesota’s application for a waiver from the requirements of the failed No Child Left Behind Act, and we are encouraged that the federal government is finally redirecting its focus where it should be – meeting the needs of students and closing the achievement gap, rather than labeling and punishing schools.
“Minnesota is already well on its way to implementing the goals of the waiver program: rigorous academic standards, high-quality teacher evaluations and extra support for the schools where students are struggling the most. Education Minnesota looks forward to working with Commissioner Cassellius to ensure that students receive the greatest possible benefit from the flexibility offered under this plan.”
