ST. PAUL, Minn., Dec. 1, 2011 – The following is a statement from Education Minnesota President Tom Dooher on the announcement that Minnesota has received a federal Race to the Top early learning grant:
"Strong early learning programs are a key piece of the puzzle when it comes to closing the achievement gap. The news that Minnesota will be receiving federal funds for these programs is a step in the right direction for our state’s youngest students.
"We are pleased that Minnesota’s plan strengthens the provider rating system and brings together the many existing pieces of our early learning system, so it’s easier for children and their families to gain access to these services. We believe the plan offers a solid foundation for a high-quality statewide system that ensures all children enter kindergarten ready to learn and succeed.
"About 1,400 Education Minnesota members work in public programs in child development, Early Childhood Family Education or Early Childhood Special Education, and can provide an excellent resource for the state as it implements this new initiative."
