AFT ER&D Summer Institute takes place July 22-29 in Maryland
The American Federation of Teachers Summer 2011 Local Trainer Institute will be held July 22-29 at The Maritime Institute, 692 Maritime Blvd., Linthicum Heights, Md.
For individuals who have never before served as a trainer the AFT will offer on July 22-23 the short course, "Delivering Effective Professional Development," which is a prerequisite for the other courses.
The other courses for general registration include the following:
- Foundations of Effective Teaching I: Organizing the Classroom for Teaching and Learning
- Foundations of Effective Teaching II: Building Academic Success
- Managing Antisocial Behavior
- Instructional Strategies That Work for All Disciplines
- Reading Comprehension Instruction
- Thinking Mathematics for the Early Grades K-2 (A revised Thinking Mathematics Course to make it more compatible with the Common Core State Standards)
All of these courses will begin with a General Session 6 p.m. July 23 and conclude 11 a.m. July 29.
Registration will cost $495 (includes travel and accommodations) for each participant under the formula limit (between two and four depending on the size of your local). Locals can send additional trainers above the limit at the full rate of $2,100 each.

Travel forms and registration fees should be submitted by July 15. Participants will not be considered registered and travel forms will be withheld until all obligations are fulfilled.
