Partnership seeks teachers this summer to mentor virtual learning communities

If you're comfortable with social media and websites, you can help colleagues in some of the country's must challenging schools via a new effort to cultivate virtual learning communities online.

The National Education Association and its Priority Schools Campaign is partnering with the Center for Teaching Quality’s Return on Investment Initiative to connect accomplished teachers with their colleagues in schools with the greatest need.

The NEA-CTQ partnership will use online tools – including webinars, private discussion threads and wikis – to cultivate virtual learning communities allowing educators to share resources across districts and states. The partnership seeks interested teachers to serve as mentors for these VLCs.

This summer, 50 teachers will complete training requirements, and many will be selected as the inaugural mentoring cohort for the 2011-12 school year. If selected, you would earn $500 for the training and must agree to participate as a mentor. Mentors will earn up to an additional $1,000.

Applicants must have the following knowledge and skills:

  • Demonstrated evidence of effective K-12 teaching -- particularly in high-needs schools;
  • Strong knowledge of differentiation, classroom management and family-community involvement;
  • Effectiveness in communicating with diverse stakeholders;
  • Collaboration and leadership skills;
  • A mind open to new ideas; and
  • Knowledge of Web 2.0 tools and social media.

The online application deadline is May 22. Note: This application must be completed in one session. It does not have a "save and return" feature.
