ST. PAUL, Minn. July 19, 2016 – Education Minnesota President Denise Specht released the following statement on the march and rally planned Tuesday outside the Minneapolis Convention Center:

"The labor movement has always been about collective action for the common good and we can't remember a time when it was more important for people to come together and make peaceful progress toward a more just society. The unjust killings of Philando Castile and Alton Sterling, and the assassinations of peace officers in Dallas and Baton Rouge, have left us heartbroken and outraged. However, Minnesotans cannot let these events drive us further apart. We must come together, stop the violence and find solutions for the personal and institutional racism facing the communities in which we live and work. At Education Minnesota, we hope a march Tuesday afternoon will lead to meaningful solutions. The march and rally will start at 4 p.m. outside the Minneapolis Convention Center, where the American Federation of Teachers convention will meet until about 5:30 p.m. Among the many scheduled speakers at the rally are educators Kim Colbert of the Saint Paul Federation of Teachers, Michelle Wiese of the Minneapolis Federation of Teachers and Karen Lewis of the Chicago Teachers Union."
